Greening the City: Urban Landscapes in the Twentieth Century

Greening the City is an edited volume that does an excellent job of displaying the many varied ways in which nature and the city are intertwined. About half of the chapters discuss the design and planning of natural elements of the city such as parks and boulevards, and the other half take a less structured view, from wild plants to sustainable city movements. The chapters explore some familiar cities such as Barcelona, Los Angeles, and Berlin, but also lesser-studied places like Sofia, Mexico City, and Seattle. Individual chapters would be of interest to landscape architects, urban planners, urban designers, geographers, sociologists, urban ecologists, and others in their concise demonstration of how different urban and national contexts matter to the production of nature.
