Are some American cities especially prone to controversies over the arts? Yes, concludes sociologist Steven Tepper: if they have recently received a lot of immigrants, if they contain a high proportion of homes with children under 18 years old, if they are larger, and-more surprisingly-if they have ever passed a gay rights ordinance. Just as surprising are the characteristics that do not contribute to contention: being in the South, having a lot of conservative churches, citizens' education levels, and ethnic diversity (which actually lowers conflicts).
