LUNDIN Energy has drilled a dry well in production licence 981 in the Norwegian North Sea. The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) said the unsuccessful Merckx well was drilled about 1 kilometre west of the Solveig field and 190 kilometres west of Stavanger. The well's primary target was to prove the presence of a petroleum system in sandstone in the Palaeocene-era Ty formation. The secondary target was to prove petroleum in porous dolomite in the Zechstein Group from the Permian age. The well encountered 58 metres of sandstone in the Ty Formation and 12 metres of dolomitic rocks in the Zechstein Group, the NPD said. It also encountered two intervals of sandstone from an undefined age between the Cretaceous and Triassic. The upper interval had a thickness of 16 metres and the lower interval 15 metres, with good to very good reservoir quality. Although all zones encountered reservoirs within geological definitions, the regulator reported the well as dry.
