With the United Nations secretary general calling for an end to new upstream investments, one could be forgiven for thinking that it is game over for oil and gas explorers. But judging by the speaker line-up for next month's virtual African E&P Conference & Exhibition - organised by the Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain and the Houston Geological Society - there is still significant interest in hunting for the continent's next big sources of oil and gas. The event's organisers also know the energy transition will pose some searching questions for Africa: What role will the continent will play, and how might oil and gas explorers' knowledge of the continent's sub-surface help underpin future geothermal projects and carbon capture and storage schemes? One keynote presentation from Equinor Research is due to focus on Africa's carbon dioxide storage potential, before other speakers zoom in on specific studies in Mozambique and Ethiopia.
