Technology helps competitive edge

ADNOC Drilling is putting technology to work to bring down costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase the efficiency of its operations in Abu Dhabi's oil and gas basins. The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) subsidiary is also betting that technology can help it maintain a competitive edge as it seeks to expand its market beyond the United Arab Emirates. More technology development will be required to help Adnoc achieve Abu Dhabi's goal of supplying its growing natural gas demand solely with domestic natural gas, much of which will need to come from unconventional gas fields. Chief executive Abdulrahman Abdulla Al Seiari says Adnoc Drilling has been building its technical capacity to drill unconventional reservoirs and can point to a number of successes. "But going forward, we will pursue further technology development." That will include an increased focus on digital technologies to plan and drill unconventional wells. "I'm a strong believer in data and digitalisation - the more information you can get and the faster you can get it, the better," Al Seiari says. "We use the different tools available to help us make the right decisions." New technologies have vastly improved efficiency in the company's directional and horizontal well-drilling activities. Al Seiari cites Adnoc's Real Time Data Monitoring Centre and "smart" drilling techniques as key in helping it pare costs by about $2 billion over the past five years, a significant portion of the savings coming from the drilling business.
