QATARGAS is poised to award an onshore engineering, procurement and construction contract involving the first phase of its giant North Field Expansion (NFE) scheme. At least two people with direct knowledge of the tender process told Upstream that the third key onshore EPC package (Package 3) involving utilities work is likely to be awarded within weeks. "We are hearing that the client is currently involved in a negotiation process for the onshore utilities package and is expected to place an award by August," one person said. Another source suggested that Spain's Tecnicas Reunidas has emerged as the front-runner. Italy's Saipem and Tecnimont are also among the key bidders, Upstream understands. Although the workscope for the package could not be confirmed, Upstream understands that utilities and off-sites are a crucial component of the project's execution and involve key onshore infrastructure.
