SIGNIFICANT cutbacks in flaring in the Permian have seen the core US shale patch being surpassed by the Appalachian basin as the largest source of methane emissions in the country. Emissions from fossil fuel production in the Appalachian basin hit 3 million tonnes in 2019 and 2.4 million tonnes in 2020, according to a new report from energy analysis company Kayrros. "Excluding emissions from coal mines, emissions from natural gas (from the Appalachian's Mar-cellus basin) declined from 1.9 million tonnes in 2019 to 1.4 million tonnes in 2020," Kayrros said. "In comparison, Permian measurements showed methane emissions from oil and natural gas production declined from 2.7 million tonnes in 2019 to 2 million tonnes in 2020."
