UK supermajor BP has been granted a one-year extension of its deep-water exploration licence offshore Nova Scotia, Canada in a move that has angered local environmental groups. BP notified the Canada Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board (CNSOPB)-which regulates upstream activities-that it would forfeit its C$2 million (US$1.57 million) drilling deposit paid last year and pay another deposit of C$3 million to extend its 2434R licence for a year. This move extends the licence to the full nine years allowed under legislation and means the exploration acreage will now expire on 14 January 2022. Commenting on BP's decision, Robin Tress, a campaigner with the Council of Canadians, an environmental pressure group, said: "It's clear that Nova Scotians want strong climate action and to build a resilient economy that can respond to the climate crisis, but the government continues to let corporations call the shots."
