CHINA'S leading producer of power generation equipment, Shanghai Electric, will soon approach the market seeking engineering, procurement and construction services for two service operation vessels (SOVs), which will operate and maintain offshore wind farms. Chinese yards are already among the world's busiest in building offshore wind farm installation vessels as China works to expand its renewable energy infrastructure to reduce reliance on coal-led fossil fuels. The service operation vessels would give Chinese yards more business beyond their work on offshore oil and gas vessels and their other construction activities to support the country's wind power sector. Shanghai Electric has invited a number of Chinese offshore yards - including Cosco Shipbuilding Heavy Industry, China Merchants Heavy Industry and CIMC Raffles - to participate in the upcoming bid, contracting sources familiar with the tender process told Upstream.
