US supermajor ExxonMobil has been ordered to start preparing to decommission ageing infrastructure in Australia's Gippsland basin, just months after it cancelled the planned sale of the assets. Australia's National Offshore Petroleum Safety & Environmental Management Authority (Nop-sema) last week issued ExxonMobil subsidiary Esso Australia with a general direction to commence decommissioning activities for all structures, property and equipment no longer in use.
