EXXONMOBIL, Total and two Japanese players are exiting a joint venture that was responsible for Qatar's pioneering liquefied natural gas development as state giant Qatar Petroleum (QP) prepares to take full control. The joint venture - which has lasted more than three and a half decades - was instrumental in creating the emirate's now vast LNG industry, where Qatar now has its sights set on 126 million tonnes per annum of capacity this decade. QP revealed this week that from 1 January next year it will take over 100% of Qatargas Liquefied Natural Gas Company Limited (QG1) as it will not be renewing the joint venture agreements upon expiry on 31 December.
