THE world is drowning in a liquefied natural gas glut triggered by rising supplies and a trail of demand destruction left by the Covid-19 pandemic across the globe. Demand for LNG is not going to pick up any time soon, prompting resource holders to slam the brakes on key development projects. Tiny Qatar, however, stands out, with grand expansion plans under way to safeguard its crown as the world's largest LNG exporter for the foreseeable future. The Persian Gulf state owes its outsize importance on the global energy stage to its share in the North Field, the world's largest offshore gas field, which it shares with Iran.
