KUWAIT and Iraq have appointed UK energy advisory firm ERC Equipoise to prepare a study for the joint development of oilfields on their common border. The move is designed to put to rest a long-standing border dispute that prompted former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to invade Kuwait for its alleged theft of Iraqi oil through illegal drilling. The official Kuwait news agency KUNA said the ERC will come up with recommendations for the development of the Safwan-Al-Ab-dali and South Rumaila-Ratqa fields. Abdul Mahdi al-Ameedi, direc-tor general of Iraqi Oil Ministry's department of contracts and petroleum licences, said: "The signing also emphasises the keenness of the (Iraqi) government and the ministry to resolve all outstanding issues between the two countries.
