US INDEPENDENT Anadarko Petroleum has taken the final investment decision on its Area 1 Mozambique liquefied natural gas development as it also firmed up major subsea contracts. The Houston player confirmed the long-awaited sanction at a ceremony in the capital, Maputo, along with President Filipe Nyusi, who called it "a historic day for the people of Mozambique". Anadarko is in the midst of being acquired by Occidental Petroleum, also based in Houston, in a $57 billion deal, and a related transaction will see French supermajor Total take over all of Anadarko's African assets for $8.8 billion.
