MALAYSIA'S national oil company Petronas is investigating the cause of a fire that occurred at its Bintulu liquefied natural gas complex in Sarawak, East Malaysia, writes Amanda Battersby. Videos captured and posted on social media by members of the public showed flames and thick smoke at the liquefaction facility, although there was no explosion. Malaysia LNG (MLNG) confirmed that a fire broke out at about 06.00 on 22 February at the cooling water outfall channel, outside of the plant process area at the liquefaction complex. "Our on-site emergency response team was immediately mobilised to control the situation. The fire was successfully put out at 06.48. There were no injuries to any personnel or adverse effect to the nearby communities. "All relevant authorities have been informed and investigations are currently ongoing to identify the root cause of the incident," said MLNG.
