AUVSI's UNMANNED SYSTEMS PROGRAM REVIEW 2012: LEVERAGING TECHNOLOGY, WEATHERING THE BUDGETARY STORM

Certain common themes emerged from AUVSI's Unmanned Systems Program Review 2012, held in Washington, D.C. from 7-9 Feb., across all three domains, with one day each of the conference devoted to air, ground and maritime.rnMany military leaders discussed turning unmanned systems that were quickly fielded for use in Afghanistan and Iraq into programs of record to assure budgetary security. Navy, Army, Air Force and Marine Corps brass across the board also expressed value in weighing the capability of an unmanned system versus its cost. A system with every bell and whistle might be an attractive option, but if its price tag is too steep, many speakers said they'd prefer a system that was affordable but merely effective enough to get the job done. And increasingly, it seems, the military is exploring arming up many of the unmanned systems it has.
