The London Convention 1972 (LC) and its 1996 London Protocol (LP) provide the specific global framework for the protection of the marine environment against pollution from dumping at sea, consistent with the overarching 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOS Convention). The LP builds on experience gained from the many years of operation of and significantly improves the LC. It is hoped that eventually the LP will replace the LC.rnThe LC has 85 states-parties as of 31 January 2009. The LP entered into force on 24 March 2006 and has 37 states-parties as of 31 January 2009.
