Advanced resin injection is frequently overlooked for ground stabilisation and yet the techniques offer tremendous benefits to underground construction. In permeable ground, resin injection can be an alternative to ground freezing or de-watering and often provides solutions to otherwise intractable problems of mobile soil and ground water. Appropriately engineered resin injection can transform running sands to the consistency of a sandstone, and water-bearing gravels to a solid conglomerate harder than concrete. Granular ground can also be stabilised to a matrix of almost a cheese-like consistency that is sufficiently robust to stand up when exposed, resist ground water and yet be mined without undue difficulty. Resin injection, principally with polyurethane based products, is cost-effective. The equipment is compact, easily handled and does not incur significant mobilisation or accrue protracted site charges. Treatment is concluded faster than most other traditional stabilising methods - once injection is complete, ground can frequently be considered as reaching its optimum bearing capacity by the following day. The combination of application speed and short curing time can offer major project savings.
