On 18 November 2004 the British Tunnelling Society heard four brief but detailed presentations about different aspects of materials and methods for sealing leaks in tunnels and for more general grouting and waterproofing purposes. The speakers were Martin Smith of Rascor, Peter Town of Oxford Hydrotechnics, Phil Richardson of the Natural Cement Company and Philip-Alexis Kaplan of De Neef. The unwelcome influence of water on production, safety and morale in tunnels is well known by most of us. Once it finds its way into our shaft or heading it seems to be a Herculean task to stop it. No sooner have you plugged one leak, than a cheeky little 'pisser' appears in spot that was formerly bone dry. The speakers this evening promised to delve into their respective 'black arts' and tell us about the different types of grout available and their most appropriate applications in the cause of stopping water infiltration into underground installations. The wide range of information presented is impossible to precis in a short article. This review therefore gives a brief report of each speaker's contribution.
