Norway's US$590M Sandvika -Asker rail project, south of Oslo, is being built by the client, The Jernbaneverket Utbygging (Railroad Department), to double the rail capacity between Oslo and Drammen. Lot JA2, Jong-Asker is a 2.7km long double-track rail tunnel that was recently constructed by AF Spesialprosjekt with its subsidiary company Scandinavian Rock Group (SRG) for a contract price of US$66.5M (figure 1). Drill and blast using an AMV jumbo started in June 2002 and the 104m~2 cross-section tunnel was completed in 18 months. Throughout its length the geology is hard rock (limestone), with an overburden between 2m-50m. This paper describes the importance of water control during tunnel construction and uses the Jong-Asker Tunnel as a case study.
