INDIA: LONG DISTANCE TUNNELLING BENEATH A NATURE RESERVE

With a length of 1,290km, the Krishna is one of India's longest rivers. It is located in the south of the country and has two large dams along its course. In the vicinity of the Srisailam Dam, an 18.8km-long underground tunnel is to be driven with the purpose of redirecting excess water from the dam's reservoir during the monsoon season into areas which are plagued by drought. The Herrenknecht Double Shield S-370 (0 7.96m) is being deployed for th;s demanding irrigation project.rnThe machine with a driving power of 2,800kW will drill at a depth of down to 550 meters below the "Rajiv Gandhi" nature reserve known for its tiger population. The Veligonda project is being supervised on site by the Herrenknecht subsidiary "Underground Technology Services". UTS is not only responsible for the assembly and operation of the TBM, but also for the installation, control and maintenance of the segmental lining production plant and for training the customer's personnel.
