The underground industry gathers in San Francisco

Hosted by The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME), the biennial Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) brought the tunnelling industry to San Francisco for three and half days in June. The 2011 conference saw 1,405 attendees, up from 1,373 in 2009 at Las Vegas—the RETC event SME said was the largest ever. With technical sessions running in both the mornings and afternoons, more than 100 papers were presented over the course of the conference.
