Two crews on the New Irvington Tunnel project stopped within 9ft (2.74m) of each other. One of the road headers working on this stretch of the project then began its advance until the spinning, titanium-studded knuckle broke through. The sun shining down on California, not even in the warm month of June, cannot seem as bright as a fellow miner's headlamp after 13 months of excavations, when two headings finally meet deep under a mountainside.
