Vacuum or suction excavation systems are becoming increasingly important for utilities work of all kinds and the tanker-like units can be seen working more and more in cities, on roadsides and in other locations. They have major advantages over conventional excavation particularly for safety in working and preventing damage to utilities that can be disruptive, dangerous and in many cases, hugely expensive. Sucking the ground from around pipes and cables means that the danger of hitting them with excavator buckets, breakers, or even shovels, is minimised, and with it the possibility of severing or puncturing power lines and pumps.
