Since the Romans laid lead pipes for their water supply networks almost 2,000 years ago, the joining of these conveyance devices has been a key part of utilities work. However modem methods use plastics and rubber rather than tarred string or moss. The technology is relatively settled but there are advances in automation and moulding techniques that continue to make steady improvements.
