Ward & Burke has successfully completed a record microtunnelling drive of 1,132m on the York Durham Sewage System (YDSS) Forcemain Twinning Project in Newmarket, Ontario. Completed on 8 June 2020, the drive breaks the Canadian distance record and the project's own record of 950m which was set four days earlier into the same reception shaft. The York Region project involves twinning the existing sanitary forcemain which connects into an existing gravity sewer. It will provide service, redundancy, and greater reliability for the forcemain system from Newmarket and Bogart Creek Pumping stations and provide added capacity to the system for the growth forecasted to 2031. Microtunnelling was used over a 5,040m distance approximately, with open-cut used for around 630m. It was also necessary to microtunnel under commuter rail tracks. A Ward ft Burke value engineer proposal increased microtunnelling distances on the project to around 5,576m, with final microtunnel drive lengths of 800m, 731m, 501m, 641m, 821m, 950m, and 1,132m. As general contractor on the CAD97m project, Ward ft Burke is undertaking all compound preparation, shaft construction, microtunnelling, permanent chambers and pipework-fitting installation.
