In the East Riding of Yorkshire, near an abandoned air base considered too bleak to accommodate US Air Force personnel, the first tunnel ever built under the Humber estuary has been completed. The 3-mile (5km) tunnel will house a gas pipeline capable of carrying one quarter of Britain's gas supplies. This will be thrust into place over the next year by two 500t hydraulic thrust machines and will be the longest pipe inserted in this manner anywhere in the world.
