The North East Link, a road project in Melbourne will involve more than 6km of underground road, to make it Victoria's longest road tunnel.NELA has announced that construction on the Link is expected to start in 2020, after planning approvals towards the end of 2019.Duncan Elliott, North East Link Authority CEO explains that an early design conceptwas presented to communities in 2017, included a minimum length extending to Manningham Road at the south end."Based on community feedback, the tunnel was extended further south, much closer to the Eastern Freeway to minimise impacts on sports fields, parklands and community clubs," says Elliot. "Further community feedback in 2018 has also helped refine the location of the tunnel portal at the Lower Plenty Road interchange. The portal has been moved further north so the ventilation structure can be located as far away from homes as possible toreduce visual impacts on local residents and move the ventilation structure away from nearby houses."
