Bowel prolapse and gangrene following vaginal vault perforation: an example of the menace of criminal abortion in Nigeria

A 19-year-old para 0t1 seamstress apprentice presentednat the casualty department of Olabisi Onabanjo UniversitynTeaching Hospital (OOUTH) Sagamu, Nigeria, onn5 May 2003 with a one-day history of gut protrusionnthrough the introitus. She was apparently well until aboutnfive days earlier when she attempted to procure abortionnof a 10-week pregnancy at a patent medicine store innLagos. Irregular vaginal bleeding ensued following thenprocedure and, three days later, she was taken to annauxiliary ‘nurse’ who decided to re-evacuate her uterus onnaccount of incomplete abortion. The procedure wasnabandoned midway when the ‘nurse’ noticed the protrudedngut in the vagina. The patient presented tonOOUTH the next day as she was initially trying to findnalternative remedies.
