Strategies for optimizing heterologous protein expression in Escherichia Coli

The many advantages of Escherichia coli have ensured that it remains a valuable host for the efficient, cost-effective and high-level production of heterologous pro- teins. Here, we describe the current status of this prokaryotic expression system and focus on strategies designed to maximize the yields of recombinant proteins. Major challenges facing this expression system are also outlined.
