Pipe Bursting Gains Momentum in Replacement of Florida Water Mains

Winter Park is a city of about 25,000 residents located just north of Orlando in Orange County, Fla. One of Florida's finest cities, it is famous for its stately oak trees, abundant parks, brick-lined streets, spectacular homes, museums, vibrant lakes and fine shops along Park Avenue. Winter Park, like many municipalities in North America, has a deteriorating underground infrastructure in need of repair or replacement. City planners, engineers and construction crews struggle with balancing the replacement of an aging infrastructure, budgetary concerns and reducing the social and environmental impact that replacement of the infrastructure causes. The officials with the City of Winter Park began the planning stages of expediting the replacement of their asbestos cement (AC) water mains in early 2002. They spent time looking at many methods including lining, directional drilling and other techniques to replace or rehabilitate its water mains.
