Since they were created at the end of the last century, the airline alliances have largely kept the same configuration: they represent around two thirds of the global air passenger market and can be divided into three groups: the first with the leader Star, which is also the oldest (1996); the second with the younger SkyTeam (2000), which is battling hard to become the first; and the third with the youngest Oneworld, which has been gaining on the other two since the end of 2013. But beyond the inevitable competition between the three alliances, the same issue remains: after being around for several years, and concentrating recently on increasing their members and helping them expand their own networks, the alliances are now seeking to improve their internal operations and raise their members' profitability.%Depuis leur création, à la fin du siècle dernier, les alliances ont globalement conservé la même configuration : elles pèsent environ les deux tiers du marché aérien international de passagers et se répartissent en trois groupes : le premier avec le leader Star, qui est aussi l'aîné (1996); le deuxième groupe avec le cadet Skyteam (2000), qui ferraille dur pour devenir le premier; le troisième avec le benjamin Oneworld, qui, depuis fin 2013, progresse au détriment des deux autres. Mais, au-delà de l'inévitable concurrence entre les trois alliances, la même question revient sur la table : après plusieurs années d'existence, dont les dernières ont été consacrées à augmenter le nombre de leurs membres et à les aider à étoffer leurs réseaux respectifs, les alliances cherchent désormais à améliorer leur fonctionnement interne et à accroître la rentabilité de leurs membres.
