THE INSTITUTE CELEBRATES 70 YEARS- 1944 to 2014

The idea of a new professional transport institute was first broached in 1943. After 'sounding out' senior transport personnel in various parts of the country, some of whom were members of the Industrial Transport Association, application was made to the Registrar of Companies and the first meeting was held in 1944 where the need for a much wider and more professional approach to transport was confirmed. A professional institute covering all modes of transport would be a platform from which this aim could be achieved so those present decided to form the Institute of Traffic Administration. On 27th February 1945 the first delegate meeting was held at Frascatti's in London. The 'Centres' represented were London, Portsmouth (Hants & IOW), Manchester, Bolton, North Staffs, Birmingham, Bristol, Wolverhampton and Liverpool. Four others under formation were not represented.
