Big Ben

The Great Bell, or Big Ben. is thought to be named after Sir Benjamin Hall (though this is disputed), the First Commissioner for Works (1855-1858).rnBig Ben was not the first bell intended tor the Clock Tower. The original bell cracked during testing in New Palace Yard. Following wranglings with bell maker Warners of Norton near Stockton-on-Tees, and bell designer Fdmund Denison, George Mears at the Whitechapel Foundry was charged with making a second bell. Once created, it took eight men 30 consecutive hours to winch the bell to the belfry :n October 1858.
