Hefty financial penalties await workshops that break health and safety rules, as Volvo can testify. Last year it was fined £900,000 after a technician at one of the dealerships it owns was severely injured in a fall from a ladder. He struck his head, lost consciousness and was placed in a medically-induced coma for a fortnight. The technician was still suffering from ongoing complications and unable to return to work more than 12 months after the incident at Volvo Truck and Bus Centre in Enfield, north London. Volvo pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and was ordered to pay costs of almost £6,000 as well as the fine.
