A lack of basic parking and toilet facilities has contributed to a driver shortage that has caused food scarcity in the UK. Logistics UK says the government made promises in 2018 to provide 1,500 parking spaces in safe and secure locations throughout the country, but these have still not been supplied. Further, government measures to increase the number of HGV licences issued by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) from around 1,500 passes a week to 2,000 will not provide the short-term relief the industry needs, The Road Haulage Association (RHA) says. The RHA has, however, welcomed government plans to support driver training schemes through apprenticeship funding and plans for a pilot HGV driver training scheme.
