The British government at first seemed keen as mustard on encouraging vehicle operators to switch to sulphur-free fuels. Then it somehow lost its way, infuriating oil companies in the process. Where do we go from here? The imminent arrival in the UK of sulphur-free diesel is seen with trepidation by some fleet managers and transport engineers. They remember what happened following the last cut in sulphur content: fuel consumption fell back and some fuel-pump seals began to weep. That was back in 1999 when ultra-low-sulphur diesel (ULSD) with a sulphur content of no more than 50 parts per million (ppm) swept aside what was then regarded as conventional diesel (with up to 500ppm sulphur). So what lies ahead as we make the transition to a sulphur content of no more than 10ppm?
