As students leave university with average debts of ￡18,000, young people are thinking twice before starting degrees. However, as a free event the SOE held at Mid-Kent College proved, this does not mean a serious profession is beyond their means. March's 'Future Skills Shortage Crisis' event provided several engineering institutions with a stage to rally-up support for apprenticeships. Melanie Powell, SOE's Technical Events Organiser said: 'The theme of the evening was the importance of training. It demonstrated there is a strong career path in engineering and potential engineers can get more out of the profession than just a job'. The event also highlighted growing skills shortages within the road transport and distribution industries. Presentations from the IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry), CILT (The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport) and SOE gave a solution, whilst outlining the possibilities within engineering.
