The first fully-fledged Volvo truck assembly plant in Russia went into operation last month, building Volvo and Renault trucks for sale in Russia and neighbouring countries.rnThe plant, south west of Moscow at Kaluga, has the capacity to build 10,000 Volvos and 5,000 Renaults a year. It supplements a far smaller plant established in Zelenograd six years ago. This assemblies 500 trucks a year from ckd (completely knocked down) kits.rnHitherto, most Volvo trucks sold in Russia have been built elsewhere (Sweden and Belgium) but a steep rise in import tariffs, taking effect last month, made Volvo think again. The tariffs range from five to 25 per cent of the cost of the truck, according to type. The Kaluga plant allows Volvo to avoid these tariffs.
