Major work is under way for Perth's $1.5 billion New MetroRail project, a multi-faceted task with overall completion scheduled for December 2007. With the first construction work beginning last month, this report updates and illustrates progress on the project. (Previous articles relating to the project were published in TA 6/02, 8/02,11/02 and 2/04, while various contracts were detailed in Transit Newsfile in TA 1/04 and 2/04.) The project is comprised of the following major elements: 1. Construction of the Perth to Mandurah Railway which includes the work through Perth City. 2. An extension of the Northern Suburbs Railway (NSR) from Currambine to Clarkson and a new station at Hepburn Avenue, Greenwood. 3. A single track rail spur from the Armadale line to a new station at Spencer Road, Thornlie. 4. Improvements and upgrades to railway services through the Town of Victoria Park, which includes a new Victoria Park Station. 5. A contract with an EDI Rail/Bombardier Transportation joint venture for the design and supply of 31 new three-car electric (25kV AC) suburban trains. This contract also includes the construction (and maintenance for up to 15 years) of the Nowergup Depot in the northern suburbs. A map (opposite) of the new lines also shows the four existing routes. Basic statistics and facts on the project are detailed in Tables 1 and 2.
