Sydney - World Youth Day

The first visit of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to Australia was at the centre of events from 15 July to 20 July, which were called "World Youth Day" (WYD). Because of the large number of visitors extra services were also run on 12 to 14 July and 21 July. A"Final Mass" was held on Sunday 20 July at Randwick Racecourse and Centennial Park.The public were advised that the best station to use was Central.The majority were advised that it was about four kilometres or a one hour walk from Central to either Randwick Racecourse or Centennial Park.There were special shuttle bus services in place from Central Station to take people with disabilities and the elderly to the event. Because of the expected demand on these services delays were expected and walking was a better option for those able to do so. Even those travelling by charter coaches were warned of long walks.
