The 72 km Mandurah Railway Line from Perth Esplanade to Mandurah was officially opened by Hon Alan Carpenter MLA, Premier of Western Australia and Hon Alannah McTiernan MLA, Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, in a ceremony attended by some 2000 people at Mandurah Station on Sunday 23 December. The day started at Perth Underground Station at 0800, when some 1400 invited guests started to arrive to travel by three special trains to Mandurah - the first passenger trains on the line. Apart from people employed on the project, seats on the special trains were awarded to members of the public in a ballot. Hon Alannah McTiernan made a short speech before leaving on the first six-car train at 0903.
