Public transport is a hot topic in the NSW Hunter Valley at the moment, especially in relation to the truncation of the Newcastle branch at Wickham. On 14 December 2012 the NSW Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, Mr Brad Hazard announced the closure of the Newcastle line from Wickham to Newcastle. For the last 20 years there have been several proposals to close the line, however each of these proposals has failed. Recently added to this was a proposal to terminate all services from Sydney at Broadmeadow, as the new Wickham terminal would not be suitable for eight car trains. It was reported in the Newcastle Herald on 6 February that passengers would have to change trains at Broadmeadow for another service to finish their journey at Wickham where a bus service would be required to complete the journey to Newcastle.
