Perth's bus and train patronage is increasing at a rate far higher than predicted, putting increasing pressure on the public transport network. In the first three months of the 2012-13 financial year there were one million more train journeys, an increase of 6.5%, and 1.2 million more bus journeys, an increase of 6.2%. The increase is nearly twice the estimated growth rate that underpinned the State Government's forecasts in its 2031 Public Transport Strategy released in 2011, which was predicted at 3.85% per annum. The plan estimated that public transport patronage would double by 2031 and need 156 more EMU cars, 900 buses and 29 light-rail vehicles.
