As Hobart's Mercury reported on 4 December 2014 two southern mayors, Hobart Lord Mayor, Sue Hickey and Glenorchy Mayor, Kristie Johnston, have banded together to reignite the Northern Suburbs Light Rail proposal. Next day State Infrastructure Minister Rene Hidding told a Government business enterprise hearing that buses were a better option. Traffic volumes on the Brooker Highway are continuing to increase and since the closure of the freight railway line into Hobart the number of semi-trailers and B-doubles traversing the Highway to Brighton has increased substantially, thus aggravating the problem. Unfortunately, the existing single track railway is lying unused and it would appear that this situation will remain for some time to come.
