In this paper the effect of pitch based short carbon fiber volume fractions, which are varied about 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 vol% to the resin, on the glass fiber mat reinforced vinylester matrix composites is investigated to improve the friction and the wear properties undr a dry condition. The correlations between scratch hardness, tribological properties and filler volume fractions are also studied. These properties are determined with a reciprocating-slider frictional test machine and a Vickers indenter scratch hardness test machine. It is shown that the coefficient of friction is decreased while the carbon fibers are added, and is unchanging on the very slow sliding velocity. The optimum carbon fiber filler fraction is in the range of about 20-30 vol% on the tribological properties, and on the composites with short fiber filler, a remarkable correlations between the mean coefficient of friction, the specific wear rate, the inverse hardness and carbon filler volume fractions are represented.
