In contrast to northern Spain (e.g. Asturias, Cantabria), where the Hercynian cycle was characterized by the deposition of thick sedimentary sequences, central Spain was the site of major intrusions spanning some 100 m.y. from late Devonian to early Permian times. According to recent tectonic interpretations, these intrusions were progressively emplaced under local to, finally, generalized extensional conditions that reached a climax during the so-called late Hercynian episode (Carboniferous-Permian). A combination of crustal overheating and prevailing extensional conditions led to one of the most significant metallogenic periods in central Spain. Sn-W, Pb-Zn, Ag-base metal, Ba-F and Sb-(Au) deposits formed during this critical period in late Hercynian time.
