Tierney, Andrew, Central Leinster: Kildare, Laois, Offaly (The Buildings of Ireland)

The Buildings of Ireland series is modelled on the 46-volume Buildings of England instigated by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, published between 1951 and 1974 and since expanded and updated. Alistair Rowan initiated the Irish project and wrote the first volume West Ulster: Derry, Donegal, Tyrone and Fermanagh (1979). Progress since has been slow. Rowan's formula of grouping counties together was followed with North Leinster: Louth and Meath (1993), written by Rowan with Christine Casey, and Kevin Mulligan's South Ulster: Armagh, Cavan and Monaghan (2013). Casey wrote the Dublin volume (2005). Cork City and County by Frank Keohane is due for publication in spring 2020 and Colm O'Brien is working on the Dublin suburbs. Early preparations are being made for volumes covering North Connaught (Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo), and East Ulster (Antrim, Down). Eleven counties have yet to be considered.
