While neighbouring Essex has got itself a worldwide reputation as the home of raucous individualism, Hertfordshire has enjoyed a life of quiet seriousness. 'Hearty, homely, loving Hertfordshire', as Charles Lamb called it, is easily overlooked. People rush north on the roads and railways which slice across it, passing through without stopping. They've heard of and perhaps been to St Albans, which, although a cathedral city, isn't the county town, but are unlikely to have visited Hertford, which is; and the Hertfordshire countryside, amongst the quietest and most satisfying in the Home Counties, remains unknown territory to those impatient to be elsewhere.
