摘要

One of the major problems that limits the public acceptance of nuclear energy is the problem of dealing with nuclear wastes. Present plans are based on the direct disposal of the spent fuel in a geological repository. However, the statutory capacity of the geological repository planned for Yucca Mountain (63,000 tonnes of commercial spent fuel) will be filled with spent fuel generated from the inception of commercial operations (1969) to approximately the year 2010. The fuel generated after this date will require an expansion of the capacity at Yucca Mountain or the construction of a second repository, and any significant growth of nuclear energy production will require the construction of multiple geological repositories.
